Alimony can be a very contested topic when a couple gets divorced. One spouse might disagree with how much the other is requesting and vice versa. There are a handful of factors that go into determining the amount of alimony in a divorce in the state of Maryland.

Courts have a great deal of discretion when it comes to determining if alimony will be awarded and how long it will last. Many courts take the following factors into consideration when determining alimony amounts based on the Uniform Marriage and Divorce Act:

- The financial condition, age, physical condition, and emotional condition of each spouse.

- The standard of living for the couple during the marriage.

- The time needed for the recipient to train for a new skill, obtain a degree or find a job.

- The ability of the payor to not only pay the alimony, but also support themselves at the same time.

- The length of the marriage.

In most cases, only rehabilitativea limony is awarded, which means it only lasts as long as the recipient needs to get back on their feet following the divorce. This means that the common misconception that alimony lasts forever following divorce is not true.

If alimony is ordered by a court, but not paid by the payor, the recipient can force payment using a contempt proceeding in the court where the order was issued.
