Divorce can be a positive start to a new life
From the day you decide to divorce, you are going to start a major life change. It is going to take time for everything to settle down enough so that you feel that you have found your new normal. While you are going through this process, you need to make sure that you are taking care of yourself.
It is all too easy to fall into a rut during the divorce. You might be so accustomed to how things were in your marriage that you keep up the status quo. It is possible that this will work for you. However, many people want to correct things that they didn’t like during their marriage. It is critical that you determine what you want now.
Take time for yourself
This can be difficult if you have children at home, but even as little as 10 minutes a day of time to yourself can help to get the mental clarity to determine your priorities. Take a walk, sip on some coffee or find an activity that you enjoy. Try not to focus on stressful things right now. This is a time when you should try to find the positive aspects of what is going on.
Find your focus
You need to decide where you are going to place your focus right now. The trouble with beginning anew is that you might want to improve every area of your life. Instead of being tempted to do this, pick one area to start in. Maybe you want to improve your relationship with your kids or work on a promotion at work. Once you get the plan for that area underway, you can add in another area of focus. Taking it slowly is going to help to lessen the stress you feel.
Protect your interests
During your marriage, you had your ex there to help ensure the house’s interests were protected. You don’t have that now so you need to make sure that you are taking care of you. This is especially important during the property division part of the divorce. You need to try to walk away with assets that will help you, not ones that will cause you stress. Set your budget so you know what you can afford to keep. Try not to let child custody worry you.
Ultimately, your attitude about the divorce determines how you fare afterwards. If you look at it like a fresh start instead of an unwanted end of an era, you will likely be able to enjoy your new life.
